green vanity/foyer table

Last week I realized I hadn't made a trip to Goodwill in a while, so when I drove by there, something told me to stop. I'm so glad I did because I stumbled upon this:

A perfect unpainted table! I didn't have to clean up anyones mess! I got a steal of a deal, and it even came with a kidney shaped GLASS TOP!!!

As I inspected the table, I began to wonder its story. It looked like someone took stair spindles and attached them to an old vanity top. I love the legs! They seriously look just like our stair spindles.

Maybe I'm the only one that does this, but whenever I buy furniture, I do wonder where it came from and what its story is. Did a dad make this for his daughter? Did a husband make this for his wife for their foyer? The possibilities are endless!

Anyways, upon even closer inspection, I realized someone tried to hot glue fabric to the sides of the table top. (Hence I'm thinking the vanity theory).

I used my trusty Purdy 6-in-1 tool and some Goo Gone.

I scraped, scraped, and scraped. But finally the stickiness and glue came off! I was ready to paint!

I decided on an oops color from Home Depot. It didn't have a color name on it, but it's a limey-green.

It didn't have any dimension to it, so I decided to glaze it with Ralph Lauren's Tobacco. After it dried, I applied Annie Sloan's wax and ended up with this!

You might be wondering why the wood looks like it's separating. Well it is, so it can do this!

The drawers are hidden and it's got an old swing out vanity support top!  It would make a great small laptop desk, tall end table, foyer table, the possibilities are endless!

Look for this in my store! The hubbs loved it, but not enough to keep it.

So one last look at Before.....Meets After!

  11. Lisa, this is such an awesome transformation. Question, how did you make the glass on top make it perfectly shaped like the top of your table? Did you go HOme Depot to cut it for you?

Thanks for linking this awesome post at the Creative Bloggers' Party & Hop :) Hope you don't mind me asking you to join us again this Sunday.

  12. Interesting, I recently painted a desk that has REALLY similar lines. It also became green. I wonder if all little desks like this will one day become green works of art!

I always wonder the back story of my pieces, where did it come from, how did someone else use this?

  16. Hi, I just popped in from Monday Metamophosis at "Between Naps....". I've been wandering around, fun blog!

When I was a child, the type of vanity that you have was very popular with our mothers and grandmothers. Those little pull out "wings" were used for camouflage!! You attached a ruffly and feminine table skirt to the outer edge of the wings. When closed, you couldn't tell it had drawers, yet they were easily opened to access the drawers and to sit down in front of the mirror that was usually a part of the piece. Every refined lady (!) had a vanity at which she performed her daily "toilette". You know, what we call putting on our make-up!

Check out any 1930s movie to see what I mean!! :)

  17. I have the exact table and I just refinished it for my daughter. This is what I can tell you. My mother-in-law owned mine from the time she was 14. She's 70, now. The finish on yours is exactly the way mine was. I was wondering about that horrible pink. It must have been how they were made by the manufacturer. FYI, if your side pieces are sticking, I waxed mine and they slide very well. Happy refinishing!

  18. what you have is a "kidney bean dresser"... not sure when exactly, but we had one in my family 50s/60s and i'd love to know where it went! the normal practice was to attach, usually with upholstery tacks, a skirt around the edge, opening at the front, using those arms to keep it open to access the drawers... our dresser was a bird's eye maple veneer - looks like yours may have been also?

  19. you are right, mellodee! the skirt was attached to the arms, or wings... i remember now.

  21. Oh, this brings back so many memories of when my dad had an old junk store. Me & mama always wanted to take it home.

  22. I inherited this same type table from my grandmother-in-law. I always wondered what the "wings" were for!
