I bought this dresser a while ago, and I'm pretty sure I told you I'd reveal it last week. Well you know life and a full time job got in the way. So let me remind you what the before looked like:
I swear this piece had a 2 inch layer of varnish on it. It about killed my arm (and sander) to take all of it off. But I needed it down to the bare bones to paint it.
You can see the before and after of a good cleaning with steel wool. Well, even after cleaning I still didn't like the gold look, so I dipped them in the stain and covered with a spray poly.
I love the details on the sides and legs!
I love the dark knobs and the dark top too!
My friend Lori contacted me about doing a changing table for her new baby. She's newly pregnant and hasn't found out the gender yet, so she wanted something gender neutral. I just happend to pick up this dresser that day and sent her this blurry image from my cell phone. She loved it! I told her it took every ounce of self control for me to willingly sell it to her because I loved it so much :)
I swear this piece had a 2 inch layer of varnish on it. It about killed my arm (and sander) to take all of it off. But I needed it down to the bare bones to paint it.
Here are the drawers all sanded down.
I mixed a custom paint color with the BEHR Agave I did on this piece here, along with some dollar oops paint that was gray and then added a little white. I really love the color!
Lori wanted a stained top, so I used Dark Walnut by Minwax. I knew it was going to be used as a changing table, so I wanted to make sure it was durable. I did 2 coats of stain, covered with 3 coats of poly!
I then painted the drawers and cleaned up the knobs.
After I finished the knobs and put poly on the drawers, this is what I came up with:
This is what I ended up with! I am in love! This is going to be one stylish baby! I can just image a chaging pad and cute baskets to hold baby things on top!
I didn't do any distressing or glazing because Lori isn't sure what she's having yet, but I think it will be great for a boy or a girl!
Maybe we can talk Lori into sending a picture to BMA when she gets it into the baby's room!

ReplyDeleteAfter finding you, thanks to DIY Showoff, I have been reinspired to finally finish a dresser I bought over a year ago for my third daughter. It screamed at me from the window of the Salvation Army Store and I just had to have it. An amazing piece of real wood and 1940's style, it's going to be gorgeous when it's stripped, painted a creamy white and the pulls are painted her favorite shade of pink. I do my best to send you a "before meets after"!
ReplyDeletei absolutely love it! the baby can use this when he/she is grows up, too! love your color choice!

I am wanting to do almost this exact thing to my dining table. How did you do it? Do you have to get spray paint or with a brush? Did you re-stain the top? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow...outstanding....very smart! Lovely chest.
ReplyDeleteI actually have a piece of furniture very similar to this one (if not the same) but I have the matching mirror that afixes to the top (it is very pretty too). I had thought about restyling it but found out it is very valuble! I love how yours turned out though, so now it has me thinking again... but it is very valuble..... UG!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I stumbled across your blog! I have a dresser identical to this I've been wanting to repurpose for my foyer! This is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteCute! As another idea, my grandfather refinished a dresser for my little boy. He used wooden blocks(with ABC's on them) for the pulls and painted them to match the dresser. Very cute for a kids room.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why you did this to such a beautifully grained chest of drawers. The before look was so much nicer.
ReplyDeleteMy mother refinished this exact dresser for me. Mine came with the mirror but I haven't put it back on since the last move. It currently serves as a tv stand in the bedroom but hopefully it won't be forever. I love the detail in the piece, the keyholes, the curves in the front, and the offset sides. I'm working on a different dresser currently and am excited to paint it. I think I may have just found some new ideas looking through your pictures:)
