How to make your front door more private

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We spent it catching up with some friends, holding sweet babies, and a few DIY projects!

I tackled a quick (or so I thought quick) DIY project. One thing that I go round and round about is my front door. I LOVE all the light that it lets in, but I HATE the lack of privacy. (Not that I walk around nekked, but I don't want people on the street to see our stuff!)

Last year I did a quick fix by adding contact paper to the door. It did the job and it even looked great from the street. But if you got up close, you could see these little gaps, and it drove me bonkers.

The glass panes weren't perfectly square so I spent about 462 hours cutting contact paper. (at least it felt that long!)

I finally got sick of it and ripped it off with no other plan in mind.
(see how see through it is!!!)

I was laying in bed the other night and thought about my recent glass etching I did for my mom's Chrsitmas gift.

VIOLA! Perfect solution. I would just etch the front door.

I started first thing in the morning morning. Major. DIY. fail. It looked AWFUL. I'm not sure if the etching is supposed ot be only used in small areas, but it did not look good on my door.
(I left the contact paper on the sidelights so you could see how bad the etching looked compared to it!)
So then I had 3 panes of an etched front door that looked awful.

I kind of felt like Sarah from TDC when she ruined her back door!

I was in tears. Hubby was mad. It was not pretty.
Suddenly it dawned on me. I've seen the Krylon frosted glass spray and ran out to Home Depot to buy some.

The directions were pretty easy. Spray a light coat and spray it again while it was still wet. It would take about 10 minutes for the "frosted" effect to show up.

I did the whole door in about 15 minutes. Other than my house smelling like spray paint crazy and my floor being covered with overspray, it was so easy!

I love the way it turned out! Sooooo much quicker and easier than my contact paper escapades!

Where was this a year ago when I was cutting contact paper like a mad woman??

So all in all, it doesn't look that different from the contact paper, but there's no gaps.

And I'm a happy woman :)
That's all the matters in the world...right?

  2. Glad you fixed your project fail and it was quick and easy too! Sounds like you had a great weekend too!
On a side note I will admit, I am a peeping tom, looking in peoples windows as we drive or walk by. I don't go up to their house but I just like seeing from the road what ppl have on their walls, etc.

  4. hah I am definitely saving this post. i live by myself so I am allowed to walk around my house in any state i want. but I also have the clear glass in my front door, which makes me sometimes debate whether i should or not. maybe i will try this instead of going 'oh crap i don't have clothing on' every time the doorbell rings.
